Dancing with God

Remember this from a post last week?

“Although there are other benefits to commuting by bicycle, I do it for the exercise. Before I started bicycling to work, I walked, ran, swam and danced.”

He danced? I can’t really see the crossover to cycling unless you count dodging cars as a form of dance. I once danced with death as a Yale Transit bus try to squeeze me off the road. If this piece is real, I feel bad for how ‘Jim’ is portrayed by the Courant.

My apologies to Jim. Apparently, he may have benefited more than I thought by practicing dance before he started bicycling. In a presentation to attendees of ECC’s weekly meeting, Andria Matthews, manager of Ideas and Community programs for this summer’s annual Arts and Ideas festival, suggested bikers might try to incorporate bicycles into a dance routine. How thoughtful of her. People who ride bikes are already viewed as the nerds of the road by motorists. We don’t need to encourage more incidences of road rage directed at us. Besides, the only thing I can think of when I hear bike dancing is the scene in Quiksilver when the guys are messing around on their fixed gear bikes in a back alley. As far as I know there’s no one in New Haven who can do that. Please prove me wrong though, because if there is someone like that, I wanna play the part of the old guy with the Gios hat in the remake.

After Matthews stopped referencing Kevin Bacon movies she went on to suggest that the annual bike rides, which have become a regular part of Arts and Ideas, incorporate spiritual themes this year. I have an idea. Let’s have festival goers ride down Whitney Avenue during morning rush hour. Participants are guaranteed a spiritual experience. I once thought I found Jesus after almost being killed by a Rent-A-Center truck. Upon futher reflection, I concluded that the truck driver was actually an agent of Satan. I guess I got lucky; I’ve heard Jesus is pretty scary.
